Monthly Highlights
Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips in New Zealand's Central South Island.
October 2023
The rivers remain closed around Twizel in October awaiting the opening of the fishing season early November but that doesn't mean to say there is no fishing available! The larger lakes in the area remain open all year around and some great fishing can be had
I always pick the best conditions when sight fishing for trout in stillwaters. Many anglers assume that lake fishing means blind casting and retrieving which to many (including me!) is dull and boring even though fishing this way can be very productive.
I believe stalking trout in still waters produces the biggest adrenalin rush of all!
It's one thing to have a fish stationed just upstream in a river while you remain hidden downstream but when your prey can move in any direction and there is no current to help your presentation it becomes seriously exciting!
My choice of fly "par excellence" is my SBN 050. It's all black and just keeps on producing especially in size #18. The small size is a necessity in clear water. A size 18 steel back nymph still sinks quickly which, when it's super calm, can provoke refusals or worse! An unweighted nymph may be the best option or alternatively, if using weight, cast well ahead and get the fly down to the bottom before the trout gets there.
Casting too close to a trout with a weighted nymph when it's super calm, is a sure way to spook it.
Tight lines for the new 2023/24 season!
