Monthly Highlights
Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips in New Zealand's Central South Island.
March 2019
March continued on the theme of dry and mainly fine and sunny conditions. This was a complete contrast from a year ago when many rivers were blown out by high rainfall. This year the low flows made for some wonderful back country fly fishing.
As a general rule conditions have to be good when venturing into these areas to allow good spotting as fish are usually not plentiful.
Another cracker for Christian ...Christian was my guest for 2 weeks at the beginning of the month. It had been many years since his last visit here so it was nice that the weather gods were kind to us! It also coincided with the continuation of the cicada season so some great days dry fly action ensued.
February and March have been the hottest I can recall with temperatures often around 30-35°C. Too hot for daytime mayfly hatches that's for sure! The upside was the great visibility for seeking out the trout that were still feeding.
