Monthly Highlights
Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips in New Zealand's Central South Island.
December 2018
Rainbow trout in super condition for Jacques.I don't think I've ever used my old line 7 raincoat as much as these past 2 months. I've been tempted to shout myself a flash Goretex jacket but then I never get around to buying one because the weather picks up and I decide it's not worth it! This month I was sorely tempted .........
Many of the usual "tame" streams around Twizel have been high, and at times even too high, so guiding has been challenging. Luckily there is always fishable water although choices do become more restricted.
On his first of two visits this season, regular French angler Jacques enjoyed some incredibly good fishing. The high river flows encouraged some large trout to hang around in waters they usually vacate as soon as levels drop so cashing in on these fish was a bonus.
By the time the end of the month had rolled around river levels had receded substantially so fishing was more "normal" if anything can be described as normal in this day and age!
From delicate dries, emergers and even willow grub imitations to slinging heavy nymphs, there is no doubt the variety of tactics needed for success keeps fly fishing very interesting!"
