Monthly Highlights
Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips.
December 2010
Jon, on a whirlwind business trip downunder, managed to squeeze in a few days' fishing prior to returning home to the snow and freezing temperatures in the U.K. No snow or ice out on the river in godzone thankfully although conditions for our 3 day stint could hardly be described as tropical!
The sun was out for 2 of the 3 days which made spotting a lot easier and the wind stayed down for us. The fish were co-operative but not suicidal so some accurate casting was called for. Jon duly obliged, including some excellent dead drift presentations which were nearly always rewarded with a hook-up.
In my experience, of all the attributes involved in fly casting, accuracy is by far the most important. In certain conditions you will only get 1 chance.
As one of my old guide mates (Tony Murphy) used to say: "for every cast and unsuccessful drift to a brown trout, you can divide your chances of a hook up by two." How right he was!
Luckily there are always exceptions and of course a lot depends on how active the fish is. One feeding avidly is going to be a lot easier to hook than one "glued" to the bottom.
Jon caught his fair share, enough to compensate for the long flight home.
Bright sunny conditions a fishing guide's dream!
