Monthly Highlights
Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips in New Zealand's Central South Island.
April 2018
Ben catching and releasing. It's amazing how quickly the end of season rolls around. There are advantages and disadvantages fishing in autumn. The days are drawing in so daylight hours are restricted and more importantly the sun is a lot lower in the sky so spotting is a lot more difficult. On the credit side, the nor'west winds have usually abated so conditions are often calm and the weather settled.
My featured guests this month are Bill and his two sons Angus and Ben. I met Bill and his wife on a bike tour in the Dordogne region of France a number of years ago so it was a real surprise when Bill emailed about fly fishing.
These days I don't guide 3 anglers but I do make exceptions for families. We had fun!
Armed with fly rods (and a spinning rod) the threesome dealt to the local brown and rainbow trout population. The weather was lovely other than one miserable day on the Tekapo River.
The lads were relative newcomers to fly fishing so that made it even more rewarding when both landed good trout on the fly.
Bill was more experienced and I could see a real fisho!
I often liken fly fishing to a "fix" of adrenalin. When you are hooked on fishing you just have to have that rush. It's a great way to change your ideas - the only thing on your mind is the prospect of catching a trout and boy is that cleansing for the soul. Just ask Bill, Gus or Ben!
