Monthly Highlights
Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips in New Zealand's Central South Island.
April 2017
It just keeps getting better!
Although Franck has been here with me many times I can't recall a more successful trip as far as large trout were concerned.
We also decided to try our luck down south on the Mataura River for a couple of days.
The Mataura is renowned for it's late season hatches and rising trout, something every red blooded fly angler loves to see!
The brown trout in the lower river are numerous, not large, but boy can they be selective!
Fortunately I remembered from a previous trip some 17 years ago how fussy they were so had a selection of emergers, spinners and my own "special" nymphs ready for the combat!
The first day was lean - only 4 hook-ups with not much happening on the surface but it was a totally different story the next day with over 15 trout hooked before we finally decided to call it a day.
Back in Twizel, and on my own "turf" again, the weather had improved and the final few days of Franck's trip ended with some wonderful fishing and great trout.
My collection of photos with Franck holding superb trout are practically endless but this year he's beaten all the records!
I can't imagine how it would be possible to better this trip as far as the quality of trout landed goes but we can always try!
